5th Base Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Aleksandar Bašić, Luke Branca and Matthew Hams.

Over the past two years, Aleksandar BaÅ¡ić has created a series of strange and uncanny portraits of famous artists. He has done this by merging traditional portraiture with the kitsch of the selfie and chilling reality of facial recognition. The project is ambitious; it will total 99 pieces on completion. Many of the works are made with ink, acrylic and watercolour on paper, resulting in vivid colours and a strong graphic feel. Some of the more recent pieces are made with oil on canvas, adding a new depth and dimension to the work. Early portraits from the series were exhibited at 5th Base Gallery in April 2017. A year later and a combination of new works on paper and larger canvases will be unveiled for group exhibition 3.1.

Luke Branca is known for creating unique landscape paintings that subtly explore present-day issues. For this group exhibition he will show a new series of drawings and paintings on paper and canvas. They are distinctly contemporary yet draw on the historical significance invested in traditional fine art practices. As well as dealing with the languages of drawing and painting, the works touch on some extremely relevant subjects. They range from painterly and colourful to restrained and monochromatic, demonstrating a multi-layered approach to making art.

Matt Hams is an image-maker and filmmaker that has worked in many areas of design. Having recently completed a Masters in Communication Design, his latest work has focused on making moving image projects that involve strange, multi-layered narratives and evocative, often surreal images. This cross-disciplinary work mixes drawing, animation and live action filmmaking techniques to tell imaginative and relevant stories.
